Endorsements: "Convictions vs. SELF Interest"
dear friends,
boy, what a week of endorsements (and non-endorsements) it has been. sadly, it seems apparent, that behind the scenes 'strategic political positioning' and 'power and politics' are, indeed, alive and well in the world of washington and the media. how very very sad and disturbing. yet, based on what i've seen thus far, not surprising.
as a follow up to my last post, i have a question i wanted to address, regarding the endorsements by well known christian leaders, "WHY ARE THEY WAITING? WHAT ARE THEY WAITING FOR?" i've heard on more than one occasion, the following responses, "we're going to wait and see what happens,"... "see how things shake down, "... "wait to see who the front runners are, and go from there,".....but my response to that is.........."WHY??"
if, in fact, the basic premise of the christian is, I WILL VOTE MY VALUES AND PRINCIPLES (of which, i hold most dear.) then, what does 'how things shake down', or 'waiting to see what happens', or 'let's see who's in the general election, then i'll make my decision', have anything to do with it? that is a contradiction!
essentially, it sounds like hedging one's bets. it sounds as if they are trying to 'protect and insulate' themselves. these leaders are willing to endorse a candidate...assuming, that candidate has a good chance of winning. they want to choose a 'winner'. they want to be on the 'winning team'. but what does that say about that leader? what does that say about their convictions, principles and values?
in my opinion, it doesn't sound like values, principles or convictions are motivating the decision. rather, it sounds like personal reputation, personal credibility, personal relevancy and SELF are taking center stage. how very very sad.
one thing to note: for those in positions of influence and leadership...welcomed or not, along with the position of prominence and leadership, along with the blessings of success and influence, comes responsibility.
on the contrary, i would much rather align myself with like-minded, grassroots christians, that are personally committed to faith, family and freedom, IN ACTION.....NOT just on their letterhead or their mission or their motto.
sadly, it appears those that are in positions of influence are, themselves... BEING INFLUENCED by position, politics and power.
so whether the high profile christian leaders choose to endorse governor huckabee or not. i am perfectly content and honored to identify with leaders like alcorn, norris, wildmon, folger, graham and fellow rank and file christians alike. for these are the people that understand full well...who they are supporting and why. they have chosen to take a stand. they have chosen to act on their convictions. i greatly admire these people. they give me hope and encouragement. they inspire and motivate me.
to all you christians, that are taking a stand for what you believe in...for your values... for your faith... for your convictions... for what you feel is right...to you also... i say, "thank you, and i am honored to stand along side you."

in webster's, the word "leader" is defined as follows: to show the way, as by going before; to direct as by going before; one that leads; guiding head. it would appear, that a 'leader', goes BEFORE...the troops... NOT waiting to see how things pan out. they are ahead of the pack guiding...they initiate.
i believe this applies to christians in public leadership positions, as well as to, "us", the rank and file christians. each of us has our own scope of influence around us. great or small, each of us can impact those around us. each of us, has a responsibility to live out our faith and our convictions in our choices and actions.
for those christian leaders and rank and file evangelicals, that are taking a stand and supporting governor huckabee now....today... i say, "bravo!". it takes courage, it takes integrity, it takes making a 'conscious decision' to ACT upon one's values and principles....not just to talk about them...not to just wait and see.
christians, our values and principles today, are the same as they will be tomorrow or next year. we believe in what we believe in, period. it's non-negotiable. unfortunately, next year or next election, we may not have the opportunity to support a candidate, like mike huckabee for president. waiting to see, and not acting today, we may lose this opportunity to elect a man that has integrity, character and competency. beyond that, mike huckabee has the humility and meekness to understand his need for God, and his sense of responsibility to the american people.

Rank and File: It's Time to Stretch...
friends,
after watching governor huckabee in the values voters summit and the gop debate this past weekend, i am even MORE convinced and committed as to his strength and electability for the presidency. the house was rockin!
unfortunately, i am also even MORE convinced, that the current christian leadership is NOT at all interested or supportive of governor huckabee. whether it be his multiple straw poll wins, his rise in the iowa polls or his increased traction. it is simply irrelevant to them.
a recent article by marc ambinder of the atlantic co., had this to say about why christian leadership are not supporting governor huckabee.
the SoCon establishment in Washington fears Huckabee because Huckabee can empower social conservatives DIRECTLY, without the mediating influence, or dollars, of the SoCon establishment.
Huckabee has an independent streak. The establishment is threatened. Their interests are at stake and they want candidates who are beholden to them. Huckabee doesn't fit the bill.
regarding the christian leadership's support of mitt romney:
unfortunately, the above theories are disgusting to me, but do make alot of sense. it is painfully clear, that these leaders have their own agendas. agendas that DO NOT include governor huckabee. it is also abundantly clear, that despite the ongoing correspondence with many of these leaders.... these leaders have no intention of changing their positions regarding governor huckabee. they seem to have a vested interest.
obviously, there there is a significant difference between what christian leadership deems important, and what the rank and file evangelical voter values. as clearly evidenced at the values voter summit in washington d.c. this past weekend.
i know, i know....this is a stretch. in fact, just today.. i stretched. it wasn't easy, but i did it. i called into a national christian radio show to ask a question to a well known and respected pastor regarding christians and politics in the gop race. i was scared to death!! but i did it. i did it, because i so strongly believe in governor huckabee and his message. and i realize that without each of us doing our part and 'stretching' a bit, governor huckabee won't get a fair chance or shake.
another BIG stretch: just a couple days ago, chuck norris publicly endorsed governor huckabee. (article here) this was huge!
but what impressed me the most...was that not only did chuck norris write an extensive piece on the how's and why's of endorsing governor huckabee, but he did it unsolicited. apparently, chuck norris has never met governor huckabee. he has been watching, listening, reading, and researching on his own. chuck norris did his homework!! and then he went out on a limb, and publicly endorsed governor huckabee. folks, that takes guts and conviction!
what does chuck norris have to gain? not much. what does he have to lose? probably alot more. but he stepped out in faith...he stepped out on his convictions.....he stretched, big time.
in turn, this will likely embolden many others to do likewise.
friends, we may not be chuck norris, but we can each do our 'own version' of chuck norris. we can each step out in faith...we can each step out on our convictions....we can each stretch...we can each embolden others around us, to do likewise.

yesterday, an article in time magazine addressed this very issue in "huckabee's bid for the christian right". author amy sullivan highlighted the struggle and fundamental differences between christian leadership, and the rank and file christian voter.
The conflict has been brewing underneath the surface, but the results of the straw poll at Saturday's Values Voters Summit made it official: the real struggle in the 2008 Republican primaries will be not between Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney or social conservatives and fiscal conservatives but between Christian Right leaders and the conservatives in the pews.

i believe ms. sullivan's comments to ring very true. (see archived post: "christian leaders gone astray")
a wise christian leader recently told me, (paraphrased) "we have a representative government. therefore, we must vote for the candidate that BEST REPRESENTS US and OUR VALUES."
christians, we cannot allow ourselves to be bullied or herded into following the current christian leadership. the current leadership is not accurately representing the evangelical christian values voter.
as a result, leadership's credibility is seriously being questioned. in an attempt to forward their agenda, and at the cost of abandoning christian principles and values, these leaders may turn around..and see 'nobody is following'....and may very well lose their relevancy in the process.
UPDATE: a recent article by the 'right wing watch' outlines the perceived predicament of christian leadership.
While many leaders want to endorse fan favorite Mike Huckabee, others are more hesitant. The source informed me that "the dilemma is over whether to choose the preferred candidate of their constituents or go with the pragmatic choice and risk offending our base."
Huckabee's rock star reception at the Value Voters Summit made things more difficult.
Interestingly, the source described a "new pragmatic narrative" that may be forming: "None of the top-tier can beat Hillary anyway so why risk offending the base by snubbing Huckabee?"
Either way, social conservative leaders are in a bind.
"If we don't support Huckabee we tick off religious conservatives," the source lamented. "If we push Huckabee we tick off everyone else. It's a tough situation to be in."

christians, if the above article has any grain of truth to it....WE MUST ACT.
the christian leadership is in a quandary. NOW IS THE TIME TO PUT THE PRESSURE ON! we cannot let them squirm out of this one. we cannot give them an option. THEY FULLY MUST UNDERSTAND what is at stake. we have to get them where it hurts. where they will listen. they must understand in no uncertain terms that they are at HIGH RISK of losing the support of their christian grassroots constituency. this is what they fear. it has got to hurt them more to alienate "us" (their grassroots christian base) than anybody else. we must hold them accountable.
and we MUST COMMUNICATE THIS TO THEM. we must get the message out.....directly and also with our blogs, christian media AND with the MSM. we have got to make them understand what is at risk if they choose to disregard governor huckabee as the christian conservative candidate of choice. the washington briefing spoke volumes as to the true choice of the christian values voter. we cannot allow the enthusiasm, passion and power of that day to be forgotten.
we need to ride them on this one. and we need to do it while the iron is still hot!!! i know it may sound a bit harsh, but it's tough love, folks...if there's a chance we can influence the situation. we must at least try. beyond issues of leadership, we, as 'rank and file christians', can contribute greatly to governor huckabee's cause. at a grassroots level, we can hit the ground running, and start doing things within our communities to support and promote governor huckabee.
i believe, the greatest thing we can do for the governor is to GET THE WORD OUT. we need to inform people about governor huckabee. much of it, is name recognition. other candidates have the money to run endless commercials nationally. governor huckabee's campaign does not have that luxury. presently, he has not been able to go nationally...friends, WE MUST GO NATIONALLY FOR HIM. each of us, within our communities can spread the word.

SPLINTERING: "Integrity vs. Winning"
yesterday, dr. james dobson wrote an article for the new york times. in it, he explains the outcome of a meeting of christian leaders last week in salt lake city. he also discusses his personal convictions and defends the notion that the christian community is splintering amidst the current presidential election.
below are a few excerpts from the article:
After two hours of deliberation, we voted on a resolution that can be summarized as follows: If neither of the two major political parties nominates an individual who pledges himself or herself to the sanctity of human life, we will join others in voting for a minor-party candidate. Those agreeing with the proposition were invited to stand. The result was almost unanimous.
The other issue discussed at length concerned the advisability of creating a third party if Democrats and Republicans do indeed abandon the sanctity of human life and other traditional family values. Though there was some support for the proposal, no consensus emerged.
Speaking personally, and not for the organization I represent or the other leaders gathered in Salt Lake City, I firmly believe that the selection of a president should begin with a recommitment to traditional moral values and beliefs. Those include the sanctity of human life, the institution of marriage, and other inviolable pro-family principles. Only after that determination is made can the acceptability of a nominee be assessed.
The other approach, which I find problematic, is to choose a candidate according to the likelihood of electoral success or failure. Polls don’t measure right and wrong; voting according to the possibility of winning or losing can lead directly to the compromise of one’s principles. In the present political climate, it could result in the abandonment of cherished beliefs that conservative Christians have promoted and defended for decades. Winning the presidential election is vitally important, but not at the expense of what we hold most dear.
One other clarification is germane, even though unrelated to the meeting in Salt Lake City. The secular news media has been reporting in recent months that the conservative Christian movement is hopelessly fractured and internally antagonistic. The Los Angeles Times reported on Monday, for example, that supporters of traditional family values are rapidly “splintering.” That is not true. The near unanimity in Salt Lake City is evidence of much greater harmony than supposed. Admittedly, differences of opinion exist among us about our choices for president.

okay, bear with me. i had to read, re-read, and ask my spouse to read and re-read this article, to try and figure out what dr. dobson was trying to say. and i think i got it. (for the moment, anyway..)
it sounds as if dr. dobson is agreeing with all the huckabee supporters, christians, and values voters out there. (now hear me out...)
i say it sounds like dr. dobson is agreeing, because this is what he states in the above article. HOWEVER, the area of contention, speculation and suspicion arises, due to the fact, that we have yet to see or hear any action by dr. dobson to support or substantiate what he has stated.
it would appear to be a contradiction between what he says and what he has actually done or not done, thus far. in an effort to give dr. dobson the benefit of the doubt (after all, he did seem to have a clear understanding of fred thompson's shortcomings.) and for the purpose of this post, we will assume he is an unannounced, pro-huckabee supporter.
that aside, i DO believe dr. dobson is addressing the fundamental and core issue in this GOP election. DO YOU VOTE FOR WHO REPRESENTS YOUR VALUES AND BELIEFS?? OR DO YOU VOTE FOR WHO YOU THINK CAN WIN?? plain and simple.
obviously, huckabee supporters believe govenor huckabee fulfills both categories, and is the obvious choice for the social conservative vote.
i believe THIS ISSUE : "integrity vs. the win".....is what is causing a so-call "splintering" in the christian community. dr. dobson denies this is happening amongst the leaders in salt lake city. indeed, there may not be obvious splintering amongst the christian leadership. however, i contend that at the very least, the splintering is occurring amidst the christian constituency.
i believe the christian voter WANTS TO VOTE for a canidate that embodies their values and beliefs. however, the christian leadership and the media are doing their darndest to convince them otherwise. as a result, christians are debating amongst themselves (as are the christian leaders, as mentioned by dr. dobson) and wrestling in their hearts, as to the answer to the fundamental question... integrity or the win??
we are constantly hearing the words, "but can he win?" or "the money!". but really, christians...is it really all about "winning"??? how about the issues of integrity, voting your conscience, the values and principles of a christian...and then trusting God to do the rest?? by NOT doing these...indeed, we may be focused on winning...as dr. dobson stated, at the "expense of what we hold so dear."
it appears christian leaders are 'desperately searching' for a viable canidate. however, in the process, they are finding themselves compromisng on issues, principles and values that are fundamental to the christian. whether it be mormonism, same sex unions or the sanctity of life, they are trying desperately to justify it... for the win.
but friends, is a "win" really worth it at all costs? is it worth compromsing our values and beliefs?? and who is it costing the most?? despite the outcome, will you be able to reconcile your conscience after the november 2008 election?
the story of gideon is a good example of trusting God in a seemingly underdog and adverse situation. despite the odds, gideon went forth in obedience and conviction.. trusting God...and allowing God to get the ultimate glory in the victory.
now, i'm not saying that govenor huckabee is gideon. simply, that we must do our part, and trust God to do the rest. despite the christian leadership, and their unability to commit to a canidate.. WE must. we must reconcile our faith, our values, our beliefs, and we must choose to support the canidate that best represents us.
i believe if christians voted for the canidate that best embodied and represented their values and beliefs. the result would be; a canidate that supported issues such as: the sanctity of life, the insitution of marriage, and other pro-family issues. essentially, it would be a '2 for 1'.
christians, we must realize, WE ARE A VIABLE AND POWERFUL DEMOGRAPHIC. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. we should NOT underestimate the power of the christian conservative vote. we can rally and unite behind a canidate, and elect him to the white house. we've done it before, and we can do it again. but it takes unity, it takes conviction and it takes action.
regarding dr. dobson, i pray God will speak to his heart. the words dr. dobson wrote, speak of a man passionately desiring to maintain his integrity, and not compromise the basic principles of his faith, in the context of this presidential election. may God give dr. dobson the clarity to see, and the boldness to step out and act upon his convictions. i pray, that results in the support of govenor huckabee.

it would appear to be a contradiction between what he says and what he has actually done or not done, thus far. in an effort to give dr. dobson the benefit of the doubt (after all, he did seem to have a clear understanding of fred thompson's shortcomings.) and for the purpose of this post, we will assume he is an unannounced, pro-huckabee supporter.
that aside, i DO believe dr. dobson is addressing the fundamental and core issue in this GOP election. DO YOU VOTE FOR WHO REPRESENTS YOUR VALUES AND BELIEFS?? OR DO YOU VOTE FOR WHO YOU THINK CAN WIN?? plain and simple.
obviously, huckabee supporters believe govenor huckabee fulfills both categories, and is the obvious choice for the social conservative vote.
i believe THIS ISSUE : "integrity vs. the win".....is what is causing a so-call "splintering" in the christian community. dr. dobson denies this is happening amongst the leaders in salt lake city. indeed, there may not be obvious splintering amongst the christian leadership. however, i contend that at the very least, the splintering is occurring amidst the christian constituency.
i believe the christian voter WANTS TO VOTE for a canidate that embodies their values and beliefs. however, the christian leadership and the media are doing their darndest to convince them otherwise. as a result, christians are debating amongst themselves (as are the christian leaders, as mentioned by dr. dobson) and wrestling in their hearts, as to the answer to the fundamental question... integrity or the win??
we are constantly hearing the words, "but can he win?" or "the money!". but really, christians...is it really all about "winning"??? how about the issues of integrity, voting your conscience, the values and principles of a christian...and then trusting God to do the rest?? by NOT doing these...indeed, we may be focused on winning...as dr. dobson stated, at the "expense of what we hold so dear."
it appears christian leaders are 'desperately searching' for a viable canidate. however, in the process, they are finding themselves compromisng on issues, principles and values that are fundamental to the christian. whether it be mormonism, same sex unions or the sanctity of life, they are trying desperately to justify it... for the win.
but friends, is a "win" really worth it at all costs? is it worth compromsing our values and beliefs?? and who is it costing the most?? despite the outcome, will you be able to reconcile your conscience after the november 2008 election?
the story of gideon is a good example of trusting God in a seemingly underdog and adverse situation. despite the odds, gideon went forth in obedience and conviction.. trusting God...and allowing God to get the ultimate glory in the victory.
now, i'm not saying that govenor huckabee is gideon. simply, that we must do our part, and trust God to do the rest. despite the christian leadership, and their unability to commit to a canidate.. WE must. we must reconcile our faith, our values, our beliefs, and we must choose to support the canidate that best represents us.
i believe if christians voted for the canidate that best embodied and represented their values and beliefs. the result would be; a canidate that supported issues such as: the sanctity of life, the insitution of marriage, and other pro-family issues. essentially, it would be a '2 for 1'.
christians, we must realize, WE ARE A VIABLE AND POWERFUL DEMOGRAPHIC. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. we should NOT underestimate the power of the christian conservative vote. we can rally and unite behind a canidate, and elect him to the white house. we've done it before, and we can do it again. but it takes unity, it takes conviction and it takes action.
regarding dr. dobson, i pray God will speak to his heart. the words dr. dobson wrote, speak of a man passionately desiring to maintain his integrity, and not compromise the basic principles of his faith, in the context of this presidential election. may God give dr. dobson the clarity to see, and the boldness to step out and act upon his convictions. i pray, that results in the support of govenor huckabee.
indeed, it would be very sad, if after his impassioned article, it really wasn't about endorsing a canidate that represents his values, above the win.....it just sounded like it.
go forth, christian....pray....act upon your convictions....and trust God to be glorified.

Gary Bauer Part 3: My Response...
below is my response to gary bauer's last email (10/1/07)... addressing the issues of sanctity of life, supreme court justices, and the GOP nomination.
Dear Mr. Bauer,
Thank you again, for your correspondence.
Yes, I see your point, regarding the issue of abortion and the sanctity of life. You are absolutely right. Indeed, we DO NEED TO BE PRUDENT in our choice for president.
And yes, there are several important issues effecting the Christian family today. The sanctity of human life; definitely, being one of them. However, in an effort to achieve this one goal, we musn’t compromise on broader more far reaching foundational issues.
Essentially, the issue of abortion, is simply a symptom; a manifestation of a larger more foundational problem. It signifies the decay of morals and values. It denotes a lack of understanding and respect for human life. But even more foundationally, it signals a lack of respect and honor for God and what He has given and ordained.
I understand the sense of urgency in regards to the upcoming Supreme Court Justice nominations. I realize the gravity and importance of this opportunity. However, there is no guarantee that with a Republican president, that we will garner the necessary support to nominate a pro-life justice. Or that the justice will necessarily vote in our favor. We hope for that. We pray for that. But with the strong opposition from liberals, we cannot know for certain.
Contrastly, if we elect a president that has a keen understanding of not only the sanctity of life, but also shares the values and beliefs of the Christian. We then have the opportunity to go ‘beyond’ the abortion issue, and essentially effect policy and government in a greater and broader sense.
On September 17, 2007 at the Values Voters Debate, the Christian conservative vote was cast and heard. Govenor Mike Huckabee won with a resounding 63%. Especially significant, was the fact that many delegates had gone to the debate with a predisposition for a candidate that was not in attendance. Yet, after hearing the debate, 100 of the delegates changed their vote, and cast it favor of Govenor Huckabee. Also, a few days later, a second straw poll at the Palmetto Family Council Debate in South Carolina, Govenor Huckabee was also the winner. In addition, Govenor Huckabee is gaining traction and steadily climbing in the polls in conservative caucus states, such as Iowa. It is clearly apparent, that Govenor Huckabee resonates with the Christian conservative, and represents and embodies their values and beliefs.
Unfortunately, neither the Christian leadership nor the media, have embraced Govenor Huckabee, or acknowledged his viability in the GOP presidential race. This is puzzling and troubling. I'm not quite sure the reason, apart from the fundraising and financial issues. However, these issues could be remedied with an endorsement or positive support for Govenor Huckabee. The Christian community would then have the opportunity to unify and rally behind a candidate, that, in fact, truly represents our values and issues.
Recently, I read this quote. I think it speaks poignantly to the issue:
One conservative leader once wisely told me this:
“We have to be faithful to God, to the principles that guide us,
and to our supporters who are looking to us for leadership.
We should be reminded of the oft repeated truth that
God has not called us to be successful;
he has called us to be faithful.”
That has guided me in everything I do politically.”
With a candidate like Mike Huckabee, we KNOW what we are getting. He is committed and consistent on the issues. He is a candidate Christians can identify with, and stand behind. I believe the schism within the Christian community is primarily a result of candidates that do NOT represent our values, being pushed upon the Christian community, due to an agenda by Christian leaders. This creates a dilemma for the Christian voter. We cannot reconcile voting for a candidate that does not share our values and beliefs. Yet, we are being encouraged to do so by Christian leadership. This creates frustration and an integrity issue for the Christian. We desire to be true to ourselves and faithful in our responsibilities in voting. But in a greater way, we feel called and desire to be true and faithful to God and our convictions.
Please don’t ask the Christian voter to compromise their integrity, for ‘one win’. Albeit, a valid one. Instead, let us support and choose a candidate that can represent the Christian community holistically. Let us choose a candidate that Christians can truly rally behind. Let us choose a candidate that can lead our nation back towards the values and principles of God. Let us be faithful…and trust God to make it successful.

Gary Bauer Part 2 : My Response...
below is my response to gary bauer's september 28, 2007 email.
sadly, i believe mr. bauer's opinions, may very well reflect that of many christian leaders in washington. similarly, perhaps, this letter should be addressed to those leaders, as well.
Dear Mr. Bauer,
Thank you for your response. I appreciate you taking the time to discuss the issues.
However, I was a bit concerned about your following comments:
"I believe any of the candidates, except Giuliani, would be preferable to Hillary Clinton."
Isn't the fact that Mitt Romney is a mormon, which is considered a cult, fly in the face of what Christianity stands for? Supporting or endorsing a mormon presidential canidate doesn't seem to align with a Christian's values and beliefs.
All things being equal in terms of capacity and competence, wouldn't it be better to have a president that has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and shares the values and beliefs of the Christian that is voting for him?
"I also think, after hours of private conversations, that all the candidates have flaws, but I will not discuss them publicly."
Yes, everyone has flaws. "There is none righteous, no not one." But in our lack of perfection, in our sinful state, it only reinforces how we NEED GOD in a greater way. For those that do not have or know God personally, how will they reconcile and work out the flaws that are inherently in them? And how will that reflect in the way they live and govern our nation?
"I also think we should all pray a lot before we suggest that any candidate is the candidate Jesus wants. When our Savior returns, there won’t be any elections because he is the King of Kings!"
Amen. When Jesus returns HE WILL BE KING.
Yet, in the meantime, I feel we need to be good stewards of what God has given us. We must exercise wisdom, and make prudent, integritous decisions regarding our choices in authority and government.
Of course, no one can definitively say, "this is the canidate Jesus wants". However, based on what we 'see' and 'know' regarding the canidates. We need only look at what they believe, what they value, what they've done in their lives and careers. We can then make an assessment of who best represents the values of Jesus.
In this case, the dial points directly to Govenor Huckabee. There is no way to take all the top tier canidates, weigh them on the scale of the Christian voter, and NOT choose Govenor Huckabee. He is the only true conservative consistent Christian canidate.
Mr. Bauer, I realize you may think Christian voters to be naive in their approach to politics and this election. We assume that voting in our integrity, for the canidate that best embodies and represents our values and beliefs, to be the natural and right thing to do.
On the other hand, many politicians and Washington insiders, may think otherwise. It may appear too simplistic. But if all Christian leaders encouraged Christians to vote their conscience, to vote for the canidate who best represented and embodied their beliefs. We would have a president that truly represents the Christian vote and it would be unified and powerful.
To play the Washington political game, in hopes of winning on a few issues here and there, seems to be diluting and compromising the main message and mission. Yes, there is a political game going on. But do we, as Christians, with God on our side...have to play along??

Gary Bauer: Letter and Response

it was in response to an article in 'one news now', in which mr. bauer requested second tier GOP presidential hopefuls to pull out of the presidential race. (interesting side note: gary bauer ran for the republican presidential nomination in 1999.)

Dear Mr. Bauer,
I am writing this letter in response to an article from One News Now. In the article, you call for some of the presidential hopefuls in the GOP to pull out of the presidential bid.
Yes, the field is a bit crowded. And yes, there are many canidates that are diluting the conservative Christian vote. However, contrary to what the media is reporting, the canidates that are diluting the vote, are the top tier canidates that DO NOT REPRESENT the Christian conservative vote! They do not represent the values of the Christian voter nor are they proven in executive leadership.
Frankly, I'm a bit puzzled. As a Christian mother of 2 boys, I remember you from years ago. I remember when you and Dr. Dobson would speak of your work in Washington D.C. on behalf of Christians and the family. It seems, somehow things have changed. The current endorsements or preference given by Christian leaders, regarding canidates, do NOT REFLECT the values of the Christian. It is very disappointing.
I've always been apathetic about politics and the political process. I never cared a whit about any of it. That is, until I learned about Govenor Mike Huckabee. His competence as a govenor, his commitment to his faith, his ability to articulate and his integrity and wit. These are just a few reasons why Govenor Huckabee has transformed this stay at home mom, into a grass roots activitst.
Why, Mr. Bauer, are Christian leaders NOT getting behind Govenor Huckabee? Why are they not encouraging the Christian social conservative voter to support him? It is obvious he represents and embodies the values of the Christian voter. Why won't any Christian leaders stand on his behalf?
"Because he can't beat Hillary??". That is the reason I hear so often. Frankly, Govenor Huckabee is the only canidate that can stand toe-to-toe with Hillary, and have any chance of coming out with his life. Not only has he governed a state, unlike all the senator in the race. But he has the verbal skills and quick wit to engage her and still come out ahead a few points. She is a formidable opponent, and it sounds like many, yourself included, are afraid of her occupation of the White House. SO ARE WE, Mr. Bauer...so are we!!!
That's why we need somebody like Govenor Huckabee. He's not the 'good 'ol boy', trying to make it on image alone. Nor is he the 'war veteran', trying to capitalize on his war record. Nor the snazzy 'city boy', trying to parlay the 9/11 tragedy. He is simply a man qualified for the job, committed to God, and able to draw even the cynical Democrat onto his side.
So Huckabee, on paper, is undeniably the man for the job. Yet, the lack of support and seeming opposition from the Christian leaders is hamstringing his efforts.
I simply don't understand. Maybe it's part of the 'political game'? Yet, somehow I remember years ago, you and Dr. Dobson speaking about the goals of what you were embarking upon in Washington. It was about "values", "God", "family" and the "representation of the Christian and family in Washington". What happened, Mr. Bauer?? I don't understand.
At the end of the article in One News Now, you stated, Christians need to remember, "Jesus is not running in the Republican primaries." Indeed, you are right. He is not. But I can't help but think, if He were here voting..."What Would Jesus Do?". And that, Mr. Bauer, is why I support Govenor Mike Huckabee for President.

RESPONSE: FROM GARY BAUER 9/28/07
Thank you for writing me. I have not asked Mike Huckabee to drop out of the race, nor would I ever do so. What I have said is that after another six or seven weeks, if lower tier candidates don’t drop out of the race, we will end up with Rudy Giuliani as the GOP nominee and Hillary as President.
Mrs. T, many Christian leaders are supporting Mike Huckabee, but others have gone with other candidates. I probably won’t endorse anyone, because I have to work with them all on behalf of our pro-life, pro-family movement. As a matter of fact, I just spent an hour with Huckabee, and next week I will be sitting down privately with other candidates.
I believe any of the candidates, except Giuliani, would be preferable to Hillary Clinton. I also think, after hours of private conversations, that all the candidates have flaws, but I will not discuss them publicly.

well, i'll let you draw your own conclusions regarding the above. i'm not quite sure what to make of it, apart from the fact that 'politics' seems alive and well.
yet, i do agree with mr. bauer, regarding the need to have some of the lower tier canidates bow out of the GOP race.
friends, please do what you can to help turn the tide and perspective of those around you. it seems we are losing our bearings and values in an effort to play the political game.
let's get back to basics. let's look at what is front of us. let's look at the facts not the politics. qualified, experienced, committed christian, consistent, communicator, integritous....this is mike huckabee.
as mr. bauer suggests, let's pray long and hard and ask God..."What would Jesus do?"...and then....let's do it.

So Huckabee, on paper, is undeniably the man for the job. Yet, the lack of support and seeming opposition from the Christian leaders is hamstringing his efforts.
I simply don't understand. Maybe it's part of the 'political game'? Yet, somehow I remember years ago, you and Dr. Dobson speaking about the goals of what you were embarking upon in Washington. It was about "values", "God", "family" and the "representation of the Christian and family in Washington". What happened, Mr. Bauer?? I don't understand.
At the end of the article in One News Now, you stated, Christians need to remember, "Jesus is not running in the Republican primaries." Indeed, you are right. He is not. But I can't help but think, if He were here voting..."What Would Jesus Do?". And that, Mr. Bauer, is why I support Govenor Mike Huckabee for President.

Thank you for writing me. I have not asked Mike Huckabee to drop out of the race, nor would I ever do so. What I have said is that after another six or seven weeks, if lower tier candidates don’t drop out of the race, we will end up with Rudy Giuliani as the GOP nominee and Hillary as President.
Mrs. T, many Christian leaders are supporting Mike Huckabee, but others have gone with other candidates. I probably won’t endorse anyone, because I have to work with them all on behalf of our pro-life, pro-family movement. As a matter of fact, I just spent an hour with Huckabee, and next week I will be sitting down privately with other candidates.
I believe any of the candidates, except Giuliani, would be preferable to Hillary Clinton. I also think, after hours of private conversations, that all the candidates have flaws, but I will not discuss them publicly.
I also think we should all pray a lot before we suggest that any candidate is the candidate Jesus wants. When our Savior returns, there won’t be any elections because he is the King of Kings!

well, i'll let you draw your own conclusions regarding the above. i'm not quite sure what to make of it, apart from the fact that 'politics' seems alive and well.
yet, i do agree with mr. bauer, regarding the need to have some of the lower tier canidates bow out of the GOP race.
friends, please do what you can to help turn the tide and perspective of those around you. it seems we are losing our bearings and values in an effort to play the political game.
let's get back to basics. let's look at what is front of us. let's look at the facts not the politics. qualified, experienced, committed christian, consistent, communicator, integritous....this is mike huckabee.
as mr. bauer suggests, let's pray long and hard and ask God..."What would Jesus do?"...and then....let's do it.

Taking Action: Mormonism and the Media

ChristiaNet.com, the world's largest Christian portal with twelve million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Would you elect a Mormon for president?" President of ChristiaNet, Bill Cooper, responds, "An overwhelming majority of Christians have spoken on the issue, they won't vote for a Mormon."
Out of 2,000 Christians surveyed, 59% claimed they would not vote to elect a Mormon for president. Most comments resulted from the belief that Mormonism is a cult, "The church of Mormonism is a cult and I would never vote for a cult leader." Most in this category also felt that Mormons were not Christians, "A Mormon is not a Christian, and they don't follow the Bible like Christians do." In fact, almost all responses in this category suggested that a Mormon's belief in Christ and God were contrary to a Christian's belief. "They believe in a different Jesus and a different God," is an example of one such comment.

the above article comes on the heels of a day that CBN's david brody http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/blogs/BrodyFile/ devoted 7 blog entries (somewhat of a record, from what i've seen up to now) to mitt romney and his position on various issues.
this just doesn't seem balanced. for example, last week when govenor huckabee overwhelmingly won the values voter straw poll... only a minimal and delayed acknowledgement of the results were reported. there is something wrong here. isn't CBN a christian broadcasting network? i wrote a letter to mr. brody, asking for equity and fairness in reporting.

Please strive to report all the news in a balanced manner. After all, we can go to the main stream media for news reported from a more political or liberal angle. We come to CBN, in hopes of finding news from a Christian perspective.

friends, i am NOT a letter writer, and i don't particularly enjoy it, either. but recently, i find myself writing letters to media outlets and leaders daily. i feel ill equipped for the task. yet, i feel compelled and convicted to do something. i know it's hard to go outside one's comfort zone (believe me, i know!), but we as a group, MUST TAKE ACTION and do something. we must step out of our comfort zones and act. the media (including the christian media) is not going to 'give us any freebies'...we're gonna have to work for it.
govenor huckabee is probably exhausted on the campaign trail. he is constantly traveling, speaking and getting minimal rest. yet, he is doing his level best to get his message out, and doing his part (the hard part!). we, as christians, and supporters of mike huckabee, must do our part as well.
whether that means giving monetarily, letter writing, phone calling, talking to friends and family, or praying for him. govenor huckabee needs us to be the 'hands and feet' of his campaign. he's only one man, with a limited budget and limited staffing. yet, with a powerful message and vision.
christians, i encourage you to get involved in supporting govenor huckabee in whatever capacity you can. if you don't like letter writing there are options. there are some great blogs with templates of letters you can just sign and send off to media and leaders. snowbriand.wordpress.com

and for everyone....PRAY PRAY PRAY. we can all do that....we can all ask the Lord to bless govenor huckabee...protect him..cut the path for him...and empower him.
as i mentioned in an earlier post, one upside to this 'grass roots' thing, is that we get to be involved and see the direct impact of our efforts. we get to be part of the team. we get to 'stand up and be counted', for a cause that will have lasting effects upon our families and our nation. this is important stuff, and we get to be a part of it.

Huckabee and The Four C's...
the four C's....
CHRISTIAN.. COMPETENT.. CONSISTENT.. COMMUNICATOR... GOVENOR MIKE HUCKABEE.
this is something we haven't seen in the world of politics in a long time (if ever!). this is what is causing a grass roots movement amongst formerly apathetic christians, disullusioned republicans, unsatisfied democrats and limbo independents alike. this is something special ...THIS IS GOVENOR MIKE HUCKABEE.
CHRISTIAN
mike huckabee is unapologetically a christian. he is pro-life, pro-traditional marriage, pro-creationism...pro-God.
mike huckabee is a man that has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
he is a man that is not hesitant to share his views and his faith publicly (even in the heat of a cnn debate!). he makes no apologies for his faith. neither is he "mad at anyone" about it, either. he openly talks about it, he believes it...he lives it.
as a christian, the prospect of having a president that knows God personally, is submitted to Him and His word, and actively seeks Him.. is, indeed, an answer to prayer. mike huckabee is a man that understands the hearts, minds and challenges of the christian. mike huckabee is, indeed, a man that comes "from us"...not "to us" on the issues of God and faith.
COMPETENT
mike huckabee is competent.
he is not a man running for office purely and solely based on the merits of his faith alone. yes, he is a christian, and for this we are excited. but no, it doesn't stop there... in addition to that...HE IS COMPETENT as a leader.
he has the capacity and the skills to do the job. he is proven. he has governed. he has overseen. he has lead. it's not only what he 'can do'...it is what he HAS DONE.
he is a christian AND he is competent... a rare gem, indeed. for this reason, christians need to stop and take notice.
we, as christian voters MUST CHOOSE which canidate best embodies our values and beliefs.
we MUST CHOOSE which canidate is competent in the task of governing. we MUST CHOOSE a canidate that has been consistent on where he stands on the issues. a canidate that is committed to seeing it through. a canidate that can articulate his vision to those around.

webster's definition of the word consistent: holding to the same principles or practice. govenor huckabee is 'today'....what he was 'yesterday'. he is consistent on issues, on values, on faith. what you see is what you get. his record speaks for itself.
there is a great need for consistency within our country, our government, and our leaders. we need to know what to expect from our leaders. we need to have confidence that they are commited to their positions and what they say. we need to feel equally confident that what they say...they will, indeed, do.
COMMUNICATOR
mike huckabee is an eloquent and articulate communicator.
govenor huckabee has the unique gift and ability to connect with people and audiences. he has the ability to speak to the issues, as well as to the hearts of the audience. his words give hope, inspiration and direction.

mike huckabee embodies the four C's. he is a CHRISTIAN, COMPETENT, CONSISTENT, and a COMMUNICATOR. a man like mike huckabee is a gift.
this is a chance, an oppporutnity to turn the tide of our country. an opportunity to bring back the values and faith that made this nation great. this is a chance to elect a leader that undertands the values and concerns of the christian. a man that can lead our country with a heart submitted to God, equipped with the competency to do the job, the consistency and committment to see it through, and the gift of communication to convey his vision to the people.

Get the Word Out! but How??
as a grass roots effort, and being just ordinary folk...it's tough to know how to go about effectively spreading the word regarding govenor huckabee.
who do we contact? how do we access them? many non-profit christian organizations and ministries are legally prohibited from endorsing a political canidate or party. but we don't need an endorsement from churches, we just need to educate and inform people of their options, and allow them to make their own decisions.
but how??
i've already sent numerous emails to various christian leaders, to highlight govenor huckabee and his christian values. i'm not expecting any responses, but feel i must at least make an effort and try to contact them.
i've also sent letters to christian radio stations and christian newspapers in my area. although at this point, we may be a small grassroots contingency of people, if we all take action and contact who we can within our communities, we can have a big impact collectively. like that quote says, " the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts". and with the power of prayer.....and Jesus on our side.....LOOK OUT! like govenor huckabee mentioned post-ames..."it's like the 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread!". yes, God is working! so let's step out in faith!!
so try contacting christian leaders, radio stations, newspapers in your community. many radio stations and newspapers have 'opinion shows or columns' where issues can be openly discussed. i realize this seems like a 'drop in the bucket'...but we've gotta DO SOMETHING....so we might as well start here!
i feel confident, if people are informed about govenor huckabee, the contributions will follow. we don't have to "hit the pavement begging for money". we simply need to inform and educate people regarding the govenor, and let people do as they feel led.
so come on, christians...let's go out and GET THE WORD OUT.... and don't forget to KEEP PRAYING!

Huckabee .."our David"..??
in many ways, i see mike huckabee as similar to "king david".
call it 'david vs. goliath', call it 'david vs. saul'.....like david, mike huckabee is the underdog. as david did versus both goliath and saul... so govenor huckabee goes forth with conviction and faith in God. he has a heart for God, and a heart for the american people. this is a rarity. definitely something special.
God allows, appoints and annoints.
if God allows somebody other than govenor mike huckabee to govern as president of the united states, so be it. i will submit to that... God's will be done.
"let every soul be subject to governing authorities. for there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God." romans 13:1
but we must do what we can as christians, to inform and encourage fellow believers and the christian community at large. the opportunity to support a man who is unapologetically a christian, strongly pro-life, supports marriage, believes God created the world, publicly quotes scripture...AND is articulate and can mix it up with the best of them. and he is able to do all this with a refreshing sense of wit and candor... amazing and noteworthy.
this is an opportunity for the christian community to put our 'money where our mouths are'...and quit complaining about the immorality of government and our nation. we need to DO SOMETHING and support, get the word out.. AND PRAY for govenor mike huckabee.
the surprise 2nd place finish in ames, iowa showed us not only the affability and viability of govenor huckabee...but it showed us the faithfulness and the power of God... the power of prayer.
come on, christians....let's start mobilizing in support and prayer for govenor huckabee.
because God is so good...
